What are diabetes

Diabetes is a term used to describe a group of metabolic conditions in which a person has elevated blood sugar, either because the body does not produce enough insulin or because the cells do not respond to insulin. The most common symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, weight changes, fatigue and intense hunger or thirst.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed when the body does not produce insulin. This disease usually develops during the teen or early adult years, and it accounts for approximately 10% of diabetes cases.

Patients who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will be required to take insulin injections for the rest of their lives. They also must monitor and manage their blood-glucose levels through regular blood tests and following a special diet.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1, and it is diagnosed either when the body does not produce enough insulin for proper functioning or when the cells of the body do not respond to insulin. While some patients are able to control their symptoms through a healthy diet, exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight, others may be required to take insulin.

When is Urgent Care Necessary?

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you may need to go to the urgent care center if you exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Drowsiness or confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Trembling or weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Convulsions
  • Double vision
  • Fruity smelling breath
